Lovely countryside surrounds Poulmarvezen

The villages of Ploerdut and Lignol are each three kilometres distant and offer restaurants, bars and boulangeries. The bar Chez Marie Thé in Ploerdut (arguably the best in the area) serves an excellent four-course lunch with wine for a remarkable 11 Euros. Guemène-sur-Scorff is ten minutes away by car and offers supermarkets, banks, a wider range of shops, and even more restaurants. The roads in this part of Brittany are very quiet even in the summer, and it is possible to drive several kilometres without seeing another vehicle.

The area is ideal for walking, cycling, fishing, painting and drawing and photography, not to mention eating, and there is a multitude of interesting places to visit within half an hour’s drive, including the mysterious Chapelle St. Barbe (ring the massive bell), St. Fiacre, Le Faouet market hall, Les Rochers Du Diable (white water kayaking), the pretty Vallee-du-Scorff (picnic here), the Lac de Guerladan (boating from a tree-shaded beach), and many local street markets, notably Hennebont, Rostrenen, and further afield Vannes on a Wednesday, all ideal for gourmets and photographers. The Nantes-Brest canal, built by Napoleon (not personally) cuts through the area and offers picturesque level walking. It was built so that old Bonaparte could get his ships from North to South Brittany and back without the English sinking them.

Culture

Brittany is naturally an area rich in Celtic culture and traditions. Each summer there is a major Celtic festival at Lorient, nearby Guemene celebrates it local speciality the Andouille (a smelly sausage to you and me) every year with a day long street party with bands, displays, and an unforgettable under-the-stars Fest Noz, (“Night party” consisting of mainly Breton dancing and a little drinking thrown in, with remarkably never any alcohol-related trouble!) These local Breton dances are very popular and held in villages and towns throughout the year. Typically, all age groups join in, from small children to seniors, and dance to the very distinct and popular music, that has a hypnotic Moorish quality to it. The locals are only too happy for visitors to join them. Bring your video camera!

The “Pardon” (religious procession) at nearby Crenenan  (along with others) is a colourful, day long not-to-be-missed experience unparalleled in modern life, with traditional Breton costume in abundance, and a photographers dream!

Located at the chateau ruins of Bon Repos, a son-et-lumiere spectacle is also not to be missed, 2000 years of history acted out under the stars by a cast of hundreds!

Day trips

The picturesque, rugged coastline of Southern Brittany with its sandy beaches and coves is 40 kilometres away.

The lake at Guerledan is 20 kilometres north with small beaches and activities for the whole family including sailboats, pedal-boats, dinghies and water-skiing.

Countless architecturally interesting villages can be found in this region. Brittany is an area rich in Celtic culture and traditions. During the summer months, Breton pardons are held. These are religious processions where the villagers dress in their colourful traditional costumes.

The Southern coast of Brittany can be reached in just over half an hour, and once there you have the choice of vast expanses of golden sand, tiny coves, fishing villages, seafood restaurants, and all the usual marine-based activities, including swimming, sailing, windsurfing, diving, water-skiing and fishing.  Larmor-Plage is located on the south coast and is about a 40 min car journey. The sea front has many restaurants, bars and the area specialises in sea foods.

The Quiberon peninsula is about an hour away and it too has golden sandy beaches and blue waters. At one point the peninsula is so narrow that you can see the sea on both sides of the road! There is a summer-only train service running the length of the peninsula offering an alternative perspective, vying with the road via a level crossing at the narrow bit.

The Golfe of Morbihan is worth exploring too, it has its own micro-climate of Mediterranean qualities thanks to it own virtually landlocked sea, whose retained summer waters keep the area frost-free in winter. The larger towns of Vannes, Auray, Quimperle, Quimper, Concarneau, Pont Aven (of van Gogh fame) all offer interesting day trips. Each of these towns has retained part of its medieval past and the architecture takes the traveller back in time
